How to make Windows start up faster
By Paul W. in Hints and Tips | 07/07/2011
Over time, with the many applications and services that you install on to your PC, more and more apps and services are set to start up when Windows loads. This can cause the start up process to be painfully slow, and in many cases makes a PC almost unusable.
It is at this point when a person asks “do I need to buy a new computer?”, and our answer is almost always a resounding “No”.
Many of these services are unnecessary, and so can be removed from startup. Just ensure that you don’t disable any of your computers security software from starting up!
The following steps show you how to remove services from starting up when Windows loads:
- On the Start Menu, click Run and then type in “msconfig“.
- On the System Configuration box that appears, click on the Startup tab.
- Within the Startup tab, click “Disable all”. All items will be cleared, and it is at this point that you will need to re-tick anything that needs to be started up. Any security software you have, such as antivirus, should be reticked.
- Some Antivirus software runs as a Service, so don’t worry if yours is not listed on the Startup tab.
- Click on the Services tab.
- Within the Services tab, tick the “Hide all Network Services” or ”Hide all Microsoft Services”, depending on which Operating System you have. Then simply deselect any services that you do not need to start up automatically.
- Once you’re finished, click on Close and restart the computer.
- When Windows loads back up, the Configuration Utility window will reappear. When it does, simply tick “don’t show this message when Windows starts” and then click OK.
